DOROTHY SANDER
I came onto the writing scene just about the time I turned fifty. Like many Late Blooming Writers, I always had a desire to write, but I didn't think I had the time or the talent. Being a paid writer seemed out of reach. There came a time, however, when the desire was stronger than the fear, or the excuses that I had placed in my path. It was now or never, and never wasn't an option.
The internet was both a help and a hindrance to my journey as a writer. The quick access to blogging and avenues of publishing made it appear easy. It wasn't. I wrote for pennies for eHow and Helium. I was making about $100 a month between the two on content returns when they stopped publishing and I grew impatient. eHow bought articles for $600, and there were a whole lot of them, 60 or 70 maybe. The offered me an opportunity to write for Demand Studio but I went on to greener pastures where I was paid $3.75 to re-write an 800 word article in my own words. If I re-wrote it three times more I'd make $9.00. I wrote and re-wrote thousands of articles. I experiment with a variety of other venues, such as Elance and some of the other bidding sites that were popular then for freelancers. I landed a gig via CraigsList writing for a start up site aimed at women over fifty. Bingo. This is where I met Christy.
All the while I was thinking about really writing, but I was too busy trying to make money. Eventually I started blogging and put together a couple of books from my blogs. I wrote for Senior publications on caregiving both online and off. I dabbled in the world of social media and built websites because all of that, I was told, was important to publishers and really more importantly I was trying to make a difference in the lives of midlife women, not to mention working through some of my own life altering issues and experiences.
When I look back on it now, I realize that in addition to my own personal confusion and efforts to find myself, our world was doing the same. Technology has changed us and has and continues to change everything we do and how we do it. Publishing was one of the hardest hit. I believe it's starting to settle in a bit now. One can make good money writing online and off. It just takes time and a focused effort.
I wouldn't trade anything I did for an easier path to where I am today. It taught me so much. Late Blooming Writers is my way of "passing it on", sharing with you what I learned with the hope that you will benefit from my mistakes, as well as, my successes. It's your journey toward the dream that really matters. I want to help you in your efforts and desire to get on the path that is headed toward your dream, whatever it may be. I never want you to think for one second that it's too late, or not possible. If you've always wanted to write, then write you must!
